Senate Approves Budget; Next Up, Conference Committee….The Senate approved their version of the budget bills for the next fiscal year on Wednesday

approving the $5.3 billion State General Fund/$11.7 billion all-funds budget.  Most important for community colleges, the legislation includes the Governor’s proposed $5,086,081 for community college operating grants plus $3.1 million to complete the final year of the out-district tuition buy-down outlined in SB 345.  The same recommendation was in the House budget, which means the discussion, for all purposes, is over on this budget item.  We are, however, monitoring the conference committee to keep up to speed with other budget negotiations.  The first conference committee was held this afternoon, Friday, with the House making the initial offer.  The Senate will be back with their counter offer at an 8:30 a.m. conference committee meeting on Monday.

Just One Week Left….Both the House and Senate have put in long hours this week as they work toward first adjournment next Friday, March 31.  After recessing today, most legislators will be off until Wednesday with only conference committees meeting on Monday and Tuesday.
